Appraisal and Revalidation as part of your practice

Appraisal is an essential part of a doctor's practice, not only to validate their performance but to ensure that sufficient time is given to reflect on a doctors continuous professional development.

This is the second edition of the guidance on appraisal for any doctor whose scope of practice includes leadership or managerial aspects. It builds on the experience of the first edition and has been developed on behalf of the FMLM Council with the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (AoMRC) revalidation group and the General Medical Council (GMC).

The guidance can be downloaded as PDF on this page, along with recommended reflective templates (Annexes B, C and D), each based on the 2007 Leicester Statement model. All doctors should find these templates helpful, particularly those who have a range of activities within their scope of practice. Specific guidance is provided on adding value through multi-source feedback and well constructed personal development plans (PDPs).

Practical guidance on the conduct of the appraisal (Annex A) is also included in document. This contains guidance on those leadership and management attributes that might be considered under each of the four domains described by the GMC within Good Medical Practice. Included in each domain are the behaviours recommended by the GMC in Leadership and Management for all Doctors, and the Leadership and Management Standards for Medical Professionals launched at the FMLM National Conference in February 2015.

This suite of guidance should assist doctors in preparing for their appraisal, including health policy leads, those leading clinical teams in hospital or community settings, independent providers and partners in general practice, as well as those with more formal managerial appointments in health and healthcare.
