Defence forces have red teams. The US defence has had red teams since the early 2000s, soon the UK defence forces followed with their own version with slight variation. A few private companies such as IBM use red teams.

An internet search did not reveal healthcare especially the NHS using Red Teams.

Amanda Goodall has shown that hospitals with doctors as chief executives have 25% better clinical outcomes (statistically significant) in US hospitals. This is seen in other areas where 'expert leaders' have better outcomes. Kirkpatrick and Veronesi have looked at the board composition and found that in general board of director having more clinicians have lower HSMRs. Very specifically they found that board of directors with more doctors in them clearly have a lower HSMR, higher CQC rating (actually their predecessor the healthcare commission) and higher patient satisfaction.

Airline operational performance results for major carries in USA have come out and it shows that in general flying experience parameters are all getting better. The WSJ has a nice tabular column which explains it really well.Southwest Airlines had the largest number of system wide emplanements (I take this to mean the highest number of passengers took Southwest flights) and they have the lowest rate of complaints per 100000 emplanements.

This blog post gets its context from Alan Murray’s ‘The End of Management’ Corporate bureaucracy is becoming obsolete. Why managers should act like venture capitalists; in the WSJ,  please read it before you read this blog. You can read this either as a commentary of the WSJ article as relevant to NHS or on its own.

We are the management and we will tell you how to end management!?!?!

(1)Medical: relating to the science or practice of medicine

(2)Management, Medicine and Psychiatry: the treatment or control of diseases or disorders, or the care of patients who suffer them

(3)Leadership: the action of leading a group of people or an organisation, or the ability to do this

The above are some of the online Oxford Dictionaries definitions, there are other meanings which you can check out.

I heard the phrase ‘careerism is a bad trait for leadership’ from Brent James, who is also known as the Einstein of healthcare improvement. The FMLM is a new organisation which has Leadership for medics as its major mandate; the other angle being management. The main leadership that is needed right now is in quality improvement. It is probably the ideal time to discuss intentions.
