Dame Clare Marx

Dame Clare Marx, CBE SFFMLM FRCS, works as an Orthopaedic Surgeon in Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust and has a special interest in lower limb arthroplasty. She has been a Clinical Director for Trauma and Orthopaedics and is now an Associate medical Director for appraisal and Revalidation. She chaired the Trauma and Orthopaedic Specialist Advisory Committee for the Royal College of Surgeons during which the new T&O curriculum was written. In 2008-09 she was President of the British Orthopaedic Association and the President of the Royal College of Surgeons of England from 2014 - 2017. Dame Clare was Chair of FMLM from 2017 - 2018. In 2019 she became Chair of the GMC.

She has a keen interest in the Patient Safety agenda and chairs the College Invited Review Mechanism and leads for the College on Patient Safety. Also high on her agenda are workforce issues, particularly the low percentage of women entering surgery, the challenges of delivering quality training in reduced working hours and the need for professionals to continuously strive for improvements in the quality and care of their patients.

She believes that change is better when it is driven by the profession. It is the Faculty and Colleges’ role to lead and promote leadership amongst medical professionals to facilitate change and improvements for the benefit of patients receiving health care.
