What is it?

NHS England is recruiting a further cohort of the Chief Nursing Officer for England’s Senior Nurses Clinical Fellow Scheme. The scheme, which is open to nurses in existing senior roles at or equivalent to Band 8 or 9, offers a unique opportunity to influence a range of critical agendas whilst being supported by an intense, bespoke leadership development programme.

The aim of the scheme is to bridge an existing gap between senior nurse leadership at an organisation level and senior nurse leadership at a strategic, national level and increase senior clinical leadership capacity and capability within the profession.

The Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management is supporting NHS England with the recruitment process for the scheme and providing leadership development to successful candidates.

Clinical fellows will spend 12 months in full, or less than full time roles and will:

  • work with the national team and regions, using their extensive experience to lead and support strategic projects and workstreams across a range of areas
  • participate in and receive mentorship from senior leaders within the Nursing Directorate and the Chief People Officer’s Leadership and Lifelong Learning and Education Team
  • champion and support the development of the wider healthcare leadership agenda.

  • Nursing Professional Development
  • Children and Young People
  • Adult Mental Health
  • Community Nursing

How it works

Candidates may apply for a place on the scheme during the recruitment period held in November 2021. Shortlisted candidates are interviewed in December 2021 and successful applicants will be appointed to the scheme on a secondment basis from their existing employer to take up a fellowship role commencing December 2021- January 2022 for 12 months.

Applications are invited from individuals who are:

  • Registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
  • Employed by an NHS organisation and be able to be seconded to NHS England for the purpose of participating in the scheme.
  • Able to be released immediately from their current work to take up the position. Note - Please ensure that permission has been obtained for a quick release/secondment prior to applying and confirm this within the supporting information section of the application.
