Day one - plenary sessions
Welcome to the FMLM National Conference
Professor Sir Neil Douglas, FMLM Chair, set the scene by introducing the themes of the conference and highlighting some of the FMLM achievements over the past few years - the Faculty has become the largest community of medical leaders in the UK, with over 2,000 members across the country.
Building on a crisis – from Bevan to today
Professor Sir Bruce Keogh, Medical Director, NHS England, gave an inspiring speech about the future of healthcare and the elements that will help to shape it, including economics, technology, science and demographics. Digitisation, particularly, will play an important role in the process and open new ways for innovation - why not use the phone as a pluripotent stem cell for healthcare regeneration?

Prudent healthcare in Wales
All healthcare systems are facing challenges to improve health outcomes, improve quality and improve value. Dr Ruth Hussey OBE, Chief Medical Officer, NHS Wales, described how prudent healthcare can make a contribution to these goals.
Innovation in healthcare: changing the way we work
Innovation is not just about new products and technologies – it is also about developing new ways of meeting patient needs, and devising new ways of working. Using examples from the public and private sectors, Professor Julian Birkinshaw, Professor and Chair of Strategy and Entrepreneurship at the London Business School, discussed where innovative ideas come from and how they are implemented in complex organisations. A key theme was the need for greater agility and experimentation.

Launch of the Leadership and Management Standards for Medical Professionals
Building on suggestions from the 2014 consultation with our members, FMLM has identified the core values and principles expected of doctors as leaders and reworded the behavioural statements to ensure they are observable, measurable, and assessable, while allowing scope for personal development. The Leadership and Management Standards for Medical Professionals were launched at the conference by FMLM Chief Executive and Medical Director, Mr Peter Lees.
