Day two - afternoon workshops

FMLM National Conference 2015

Leadership of major technological advances and the empowered patient

This workshop discussed how new technologies will impact future healthcare and how clinical leadership needs to adapt to realise the new benefits. It is foressen that the advances in genomics will make personalised medicine widespread; wearable technologies will offer remote monitoring and treatment; and patients for the first time will have access to more medical data than their clinical teams. All these technologies will mean a more empowered patient and a significant change to the dynamics of care giving.

Inspiring and developing doctors as leaders: learning from education, practice and evidence

How are we going to improve the effectiveness of leadership and management development for all doctors, not just those with a keen interest in clinical leadership? In this session, speakers from the four nations, FMLM and the university sector described what they see as some of the leading examples of practice, the role of the FMLM leadership standards as a framework for development activities and what opportunities are available for students and doctors at all levels to develop their leadership skills.

Diversity and a system of all the talents

The population and staff diversity within the NHS is vast and complex. In order for us to provide fit-for-purpose, high-quality services we need to ensure that we are enhancing the skills and talents of the entirety of our workforce. In this interactive session, participants explored issues around inclusion, the unconscious bias, and developing a personal narrative of change and awareness.

Preparing for the next step up: interview skills for medical leadership roles

This workshop was intended for medical leaders aiming for their next leadership role, focusing on the recruitment process and interview. The interactive session explored the experiences from the audience to illustrate or to challenge key messages. The speaker panel included a senior regional medical leader, a coach and assessment consultant, and a past CEO and current appointment panel chair.

FMLM mentoring scheme

This session provided an introduction to the FMLM mentoring scheme and a practical workshop to learn mentoring skills. The workshop particularly emphasised the key role mentoring can play in medical training and careers, including in developing leadership and management skills, and drew on lessons from the FMLM Trainee and Student Mentoring Scheme.
