Prof David Blaney, Head of Risk Education, Medical Protection Society
Dr Mark Dinwoodie, Head of Member Education, Medical Protection Society

Presentations to follow

This workshop was designed to be both evidence based and of practical value. It explored the issue of ‘disruptive doctors’ and focussed on the identification, management and remediation of doctors whose behaviour and performance is a cause for concern. The workshop drew on international literature to illustrate the importance of early identification of doctors with adverse risk profiles and the impact these doctors have on patient experience – three per cent of doctors are responsible for up to 49 per cent of patient complaints. Examples of successful management approaches and intensive remediation interventions were provided, including data from the Medical Protection Society Clinical Communication Programme.

Transforming care: Building clinical commissioning group capability for large scale change

Mark Jennings MBA. BSc. CEng, Senior Associate, Transforming Care Programme, NHS Improving Quality - Delivery Team

Presentations to follow

Within the new NHS structure in England, Clinical Commissioning Groups have responsibility for commissioning health care services and improving population health. The changes they will need to bring about in a restricted financial environment are very significant and may not be achievable using conventional change management approaches. This session introduced NHS Improving Quality, explored the complex challenges faced by CCGs and described NHS Improving Quality’s experience of working with CCGs to apply large scale change techniques that seek to use a social movement approach to change through commitment rather than compliance.

Leading a highly intellectual team

Andrew Vincent, Partner, Academyst, LLP

Presentation to follow

Leading a team of experts isn’t easy, evidenced by institutional inertia, growing clinical-managerial divides and rapidly eroding morale. Medicademy argues that a very different approach is needed. This workshop brought evidence and experience in this area into a practical, engaging session. It examined the nature of groups, why some approaches fail and detailed how to create productive and collaborative engagement, regardless of the difficulty of the issues.
