GMC Guidance: The tools to engineer culture change and promote professionalism in your department

Tista Chakravarty-Gannon, Regional Leason Advisor, General Medical Council
Dr Judith Hulf, Senior Medical Advisor, General Medical Council
Dr Vicky Osgood, Assistant Director, Postgraduate Education, General Medical Council
Peter Dacombe, Clinical Fellow, General Medical Council

Professional guidance is an important influence on the culture of medical teams and behaviour of individual doctors. In this hour-long workshop for all medical leaders, attendees helped  the GMC think about how it can make its guidance more relevant and accessible to doctors in their everyday practice. How could the GMC’s guidance be more relevant to the real-life situations faced by doctors? How can doctors access that information when they really need it? And how should medical leaders embed this guidance within their teams and organisations?

Creating the Culture of Quality in Healthcare - Dr Philip Pearson

The breakfast session outlined the fundamental aspects that drive a culture of quality and transformation in organisations, referencing established industry standards and concepts and reflected on why the healthcare industry remains decades behind other sectors and struggles to generate momentum. The session emphasised the need to mobilise those with unique perspectives on what is happening in healthcare and what needs fixing- including junior doctors, medical students and the healthcare profession at large- by establishing a professional quality culture within that community, including options for industry standard learning and sharing.
