Regional meetings

Armed Forces

The session was introduced by the Surgeon General, Air Marshal Evans, and then led by three speakers.

Brig Cordell led a discussion on leadership, ethics and revalidation, which investigated how excellence in leadership, founded on ethics, could be assured over the long term. Also, how best practice could be shared within the Defence Medical Services (DMS) and wider healthcare sector.

Air Cdre Amos provided an update on the development of leadership and management competencies within the DMS. While the Defence Academy sponsors the Defence Leadership Model, the NHS Leadership Academy sponsors the NHS Leadership Framework.

Surg Lt Tallowin discussed the opportunities for leadership development currently available to trainees, along with the new projects being created, including a structured mentorship and personal development programme between medical students and qualified doctors.

London

The London regional meeting at FMLM focussed on improving patient safety. The session was used to learn from examples of best practice from all sectors across London, including looking at how working with patients can be an effective means of making healthcare safer.

Midlands and East

This session explored ‘The Changing Face of Hospital Inspection – A Midlands and East Perspective’ led by Dr Levy. This included presentations of examples of transformational medical leadership by FMLM members. Attendees had the opportunity to engage in a forum discussion of the role of the FMLM in the Midlands and East.

North of England

The session was led by Dr Phil Ayres with presentations and discussions from different members of the North of England team. Topics included a look at the plans on taking forward the aims of colleagues in the region and the specific experiences of leaders here. The emphasis was on promoting dialogue and participation of all delegates, from trainees to senior leaders.

Wales

As part of its transparency strategy, the Welsh Assembly Government recently launched the ‘MyLocalHealthService’ website. The site was created for patients to access information about local primary and secondary healthcare facilities. The session focussed on how this service is being used in Wales to improve the transparency of health reporting.
