Armed Forces Regional Conference

Leadership in military medicine and beyond

5 CPD points available

Following on from the success of the Midland and East and Armed Forces joint regional conference Supporting medical leaders on the frontline, the FMLM Armed Forces region has reformed the ranks to organise the Leadership in Military Medicine and Beyond event with the Military Medicine Section and the Institute of Healthcare Management on 29 September at the Royal Society of Medicine.

This one day event looks to bring together doctors and medical leaders within and out of the Armed Forces to define leadership, compare leadership styles and look at the pros and cons of change.

Aims

The military is renowned for its leadership and military healthcare should be no different. The aim of this conference is to examine and challenge healthcare workers (both civilian and military) to understand what it takes to lead the delivery of an effective, cohesive, and dynamic health service that is capable of tolerating austerity, change and uncertainty. ‘Leadership in military medicine and beyond…’ aims to inform, and encourage discussion and debate on the importance of good leadership, the challenges faced, and the training requirement to deliver this.

Objectives

To invite experienced senior military officers, clinicians and other experts in medical leadership to outline the current issues in healthcare leadership and identify the challenges to training and developing within this field. Leadership skills can always be refined, and whilst military medical practice and training in challenging environments allows real-life opportunities to extract the best from teams and resources (whether regular or reservist), this does not always translate into day-to-day success in NHS or peace-time military practice. This meeting will provide a forum in which topical issues can be discussed and addressed, and opportunities created to explore his complex issue.

Military Medicine Section Annual General Meeting

This meeting will include the Section's Annual General Meeting, which will take place at 1.00 pm in the Naim Dangoor Auditorium. All Section Members are encouraged to attend.
