Great Ormond Street Hospital: Developing Leaders Programme

Ongoing

Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) is one of the world’s leading children's hospitals. Since its formation in 1852, the hospital has been dedicated to children’s healthcare and to finding new and better ways to treat childhood illnesses.

Our mission is to put the ‘child first and always’, which is to help the sickest children with complex health needs to fulfil their potential. To turn our vision into a reality we have defined four priorities:

Our 'Always Values' are to be:

  • ‘always welcoming’,
  • ‘always helpful’,
  • ‘always expert’
  • and ‘always one team’

To enable our staff to fulfill our mission and ambition, GOSH offers a wide prospectus of learning to all staff groups. Together with London South Bank University, we train the largest number of paediatric nurses in the UK. We also play a leading role in training paediatric doctors and other health professionals.

About the programme

Developing Leaders is a multi-professional programme for colleagues operating at a mid-senior level. The programme has been designed in alignment with GOSH leadership strategy and aims to develop and advance leadership capability amongst mid-senior colleagues serving as front line leaders and managers.

It is a multi-disciplinary, experiential course allowing colleagues from different departments and professions to learn together, share experiences and reflect on their leadership roles, current practice and future aspirations. The programme is aligned to five core areas of GOSH Leadership and Management Competency Framework:

Self –focus on personal resilience, drive, self-development and self-awareness of leadership style.

Team–nurture and develop diverse, high performing teams through inclusive, compassionate team leadership.

Service–leading or supporting service development, driving efficiencies and improvement by effectively navigating the space between different teams, integrating skills and resources in service of our patients.

Corporate Responsibility–active in the delivery of the wider GOSH strategies and transformation programme, understanding competing demands and corporate governance. Appreciating and demonstrating good citizenship at GOSH.

System-working within the NHS, understanding the statutory, regulatory and policy framework which guide our work, acting as translator, communicator and advocate both in and outside the Trust.

The programme will enable participants to:

  1. Explore the system in which they work and their leadership role within it;
  2. Identify their approach to leadership and the impact on others, thus developing self-awareness and self-confidence as a leader;
  3. Develop confidence and practical skills in leading a team: holding staff to account for performance, delegating, giving feedback and coaching for high performance;
  4. Understand the dynamics that might underpin their practice in the system in which they work and, on the basis of this, to sharpen their communication and influencing skills;
  5. Identify areas for service improvement, make the case for change (to manager and colleagues), lead and follow through to achieve sustainable improvements; and
  6. Reduce isolation and increase networking and support.
