North of England regional conference

Professional standards in action: diverse and collaborative medical leadership
12 November 2014

On 12 November 2014, FMLM North of England region held its first regional conference for FMLM members and non-members in the North. This one day conference was held at the Park Plaza, Leeds.

The conference theme explored how diverse and collaborative leadership contributes to improved patient care and health outcomes. It was an exciting opportunity to hear from some of the most senior regional and national healthcare leaders. The programme boasted an exciting mix of large and small group work with added opportunities for learning about subjects like personal finance management and what it feels like to work with a good coach.

Hear from Regional Lead, Dr Phil Ayres on his thoughts on the day:

“It was a daunting prospect to hold the first proper regional conference for the North but there were many enthusiastic people to give a hand and the trainee cohort were just fantastic at making sure we had a successful event. The turnout was high and we had good ‘local’ speakers: by the North, about the North. The work people seemed to enjoy most was the practical stuff – being able to meet people, experience coaching and mentoring maybe for the first time, and hearing about practical hands-on leadership for the first time.

Nancy Redfearn and her team of coaches were particularly appreciated, giving time to focus on real problems and we had some great sessions from women in very senior roles such as chief executive (Jackie Bene) and postgraduate dean (Jackie Hayden). But the most influential input for me was the opening talk by Kate Grainger; champion of the #hellomynameis campaign to bring a personal touch to care. Kate demonstrated the impact on her of being looked after in a well-led system, when tackling the most difficult of life’s problems, and she was an inspiration to us all.

A big thank you to all who made the day such high quality, by turning up and contributing to such a fantastic day.”

Dr Phil Ayres, Regional Lead for North of England, FMLM and Associate Medical Director, Leeds Teaching Hospitals
