Dr Jack Haywood

Health Education England
National Medical Director's Clinical Fellow 2022/23

Dr Jack Haywood is a Public Health Specialty Registrar based in London, most recently working on the commissioning of substance misuse, alcohol and sexual health services in a local authority.

He studied medicine at King’s College London, graduating in 2016. During this time, he also gained a BSc in Health Management at Imperial College London. After medical school, he went on to complete the Academic Foundation Programme in Hertfordshire where he completed postgraduate studies in Medical Education and commenced a MSc in Global Health Policy at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, which he has recently completed. Following his Foundation Training, he worked in Belfast for two years, predominantly in renal and transplant medicine.

Jack has held several leadership positions. After finishing medical school and before embarking on his medical career, he was Vice President for Education (Health) at his students’ union, elected to represent and advocate for over 29 000 healthcare students. He was also a Founding Scholar of the Healthcare Leadership Academy before leading the Belfast Cohort of scholars for two years. He was also the East of England Academic Foundation Doctor Representative, sitting on national committees, and has more recently been a London School of Public Health Registrar Representative.

In this spare time, Jack enjoys singing and has been a member of many choirs, including the Belfast Philharmonic Choir. He also is a keen cyclist, likes to bake and enjoys exploring new places.

Reason for applying for the scheme

Jack applied to this FMLM fellowship because he has a strong belief that good leadership within the health service fosters an environment in which people want to, and importantly are proud to, train and work. This will in turn benefit patients, and tackle some of the challenges the NHS faces, including workforce recruitment and retention.

On a personal level, Jack has held leadership positions at both an institutional and regional level. This fellowship gives him the opportunity to observe and get involved with leadership at a national level, helping him to build on the leadership skills he has gained so far. He also looks forward to meeting with likeminded individuals on the scheme with whom he can share ideas.

Ultimately, Jack would like to take the skills learnt during this fellowship back to Public Health to equip him to be a successful leader in the field, particularly in policy formation and implementation.
