About me

I joined the NHS in Scotland as a Graduate Management Trainee after completing a PhD in Geography. It was the only job I applied for at the time, and what a fantastic way it was to get an introduction to the diversity, challenges and cultures of different parts of the NHS. I worked in senior general manager roles across the NHS in Scotland, including time as an NHS adviser in the Scottish Government. My last role before leaving the NHS was as Hospital Manager for Inverclyde Royal Hospital in Greenock (still one of my most favourite jobs).

My years in consultancy and coaching have allowed me to work with leaders and managers across public, private and third sectors. Being able to share perspectives and insights from across these different sectors and cultures is something I bring to coaching relationships (and to supporting coachees to develop a collaborative and systems oriented view and approach).

I continue to undertake consultancy work within NHS Scotland, and provide support and facilitation to national programmes through Health Education England.

Living in the West of Scotland, I enjoy getting out to walk in some lovely hills and countryside. With a husband and two teenage children life in busy, and I am hoping that this next year will see me successfully achieve my third dan black belt in Shitoryu karate.

Coaching processAs a coach I behave in ways which reflect the highest ethical standards – this is central to my view of myself as a coach. Thus, confidentiality is assured, honesty is essential and professional integrity is crucial in all areas of my coaching behaviour and activities. My style and approach to coaching is that it is a developmental intervention to support personal and professional growth, to release potential, and to maximise performance at work. In essence, I believe that the coaching process and interventions should operate such that the client recognises and feels they are more capable in assessing their situation, making decisions, and/or taking action. It is about helping clients and/or individuals to learn rather than telling them. My style and approach recognises the fundamental important of the nature of the relationship between coach and client in achieving successful outcomes – and this guides my behaviour in being ‘present’, non-judgemental, empathic, curious and seeing our coaching relationship as a connection of equals.

What can I offer you?

My approach to coaching is client centred and action oriented. The individual (and where appropriate the organisation or sponsor) decides on the agenda and their objectives. My role is to discover and clarify the agenda, align with what the client wants to achieve, encourage their self-awareness, draw out client generated solutions and strategies, support them in how they access any support they may need to overcome barriers to progress, and hold them responsible and accountable for change and for outcomes. A key focus for me is on “so what…?”. How will the individual be behaving differently as a result? What will clients be thinking and doing differently? What results will they be achieving as a result? I can use a variety of professional tools and learning materials to support my coaching – for example gathering feedback through appropriate questionnaires and diagnostic tools (which may be 360 degree in nature), and/or using professional and personal review and development feedback for the client/individual. I will often share professional reading material with coaching clients as a way of building their knowledge around an issue, judging their interest and engagement, and gauging their thoughts and feelings. Words that clients have used to describe my coaching style would be empathic, pragmatic, non-judgemental, insightful, thought-provoking, and authentic. Feedback from clients would be that my style was appropriately challenging and supportive of them in reflecting, identifying and implementing their vision, values and objectives – focussed on helping them to make a difference through their leadership of situations for now and into the future.
