About me

My coaching ambition is to unlock the innate talent, capabilities and experience of each of my clients. I am firmly of the Socratic view that “I cannot teach anybody anything – I can only make them think.”

My coaching work has been primarily at senior and middle management level, where the focus of the coaching has been on personal and business development and problem solving.  I work best with people who are committed to improving themselves and their organisations and have a desire to change.

My coaching style is ‘non-directive’ and I aim to increase individuals’ self-awareness, resourcefulness and understanding through the skilful use of observation and feedback, active listening and incisive questioning.  ‘Non-directive’ does not mean unchallenging.  I guide my coaching clients to find their own solutions to the issues that they face, and this will frequently involve challenging self-limiting assumptions or unproductive ways of thinking that may be preventing them from realising their true potential.

I draw on positive psychology tools and techniques, believing strongly that the majority of people respond better and make quicker progress by building on strengths rather than eradicating weaknesses.

I abide by the European Mentoring and Coaching Council Code of Ethics and contract clearly with each client in writing prior to the start of a coaching assignment, so that issues such as confidentiality, feedback, coaching objectives and the practicalities such as fees are clearly understood and agreed.

Background and contribution

Recent coaching assignments have included preparing for a leadership role, handling conflict more effectively, developing presence and assertiveness, working strategically, numerous 360⁰ feedback sessions and a host of other issues that face and challenge today’s medical managers and leaders.

For over a decade I have worked as an executive coach, workplace mediator and organisational consultant.  I am also a non-executive director of a niche consultancy specialising in conflict resolution in the workplace.    Prior to this I spent 10 years in an executive role with the health and wellbeing subsidiary of AXA PPP Healthcare, responsible for a team delivering OH and EAP services to a portfolio of over 1000 accounts including 17% of the FSTE 100.  I also have 15 years’ organisational consulting experience, primarily in employee research and communications.

Testimonials

“Liz McCaw has supported me through a number of role transitions both as a doctor and as a business leader.  Her approach has been instrumental in helping me with my self-awareness, personal impact and developing weaker areas to improve my success as a leader.  She is a very capable and active listener and has quickly tuned into my areas for development and challenged my perceptions where required…..It’s been an exciting journey, and I am glad Liz has been part of it.  I would warmly recommend her services as an Executive Coach.”  GP and Managing Director, private Healthcare company

“Liz McCaw is a calm and thoughtful professional with a long and varied business background who applies her significant knowledge and skills to the development of medical leaders through effective coaching.  She makes very good use of time, grasping development needs quickly, assessing which tools may be most effective and then working collaboratively whilst holding that individual to account.  My personal experience of working with Liz to progress my own development goals has been entirely positive.  The work we did together in six sessions over six months has transformed my approach to leadership and in particular allowed me to unlock the confidence needed to succeed.”  MB and Chief Medical Officer, Biomedical company

“Liz McCaw was a valued member of my team for a number of years.  She is a strategic thinker with an excellent grasp of the business, making insightful and well-considered contributions to all matters brought to the board table.  She led her team through a period of intense change, dealing sensitively and professionally with her staff and retaining customer loyalty throughout while delivering on time and in full what she was tasked to do.  An intelligent and articulate all-rounder, she was trusted and respected by her colleagues, and introduced many employee engagement initatives within the business.  Liz’s skills, strengths and experience will make her an excellent executive coach and business consultant.”  MD, AXA ICAS International
