Ms Marian Salek

Office of the Chief Pharmaceutical Officer 2021/22
Chief Pharmaceutical Officer's Clinical Fellow Scheme 2021/22

Marian Salek studied Pharmacy at the University of Bath and went on to complete a pre-registration year at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, where she stayed to complete foundation/junior rotational pharmacist training, whilst obtaining a post-graduate certificate in pharmacy practice from UCL.

Marian then went on work as an Acute Medicine/Elderly Care pharmacist at West Middlesex University Hospital, whilst obtaining a distinction for a post-graduate clinical diploma in clinical pharmacy from QUB. She transitioned into an Acute and Emergency Medicine role at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital allowing development of management and leadership skills and education and training of junior and MDT workforce.

This was followed by a specialist role in HIV, GUM and Infectious Diseases at UCLH, allowing extensive MDT working and quality/service improvement work. Marian returned to Chelsea and Westminster Hospital again in 2019 to undertake a split general medicine and research post- this involved practice research on the TCAM initiative and also working with an MDT group to set up the hospital's frailty unit.

The year 2020 saw a return to UCLH in a Clinical Commissioning role focusing on a £18million cost-saving project centred around regulating and streamlining high-cost drug use in the Trust. In September 2020, Marian started as Flu Campaign Lead for UCLH Trust and led to record-breaking vaccination rates for the Trust. In November 2020, Marian began work on the COVID Vaccination Programme, focusing on setting up the UCLH hospital hub at first and then pivoting into overseeing the workforce element of the COVID Vaccination in North Central London Mass Vaccination Sites, leading on training development, primary care workforce support and the retention programme (aimed at retaining the vaccination workforce in the NHS).

Reason for applying for the scheme

Marian is a dedicated and hard-working individual, who has always sought to challenge herself and push the boundaries of her own capabilities. She is passionate about effective management and leadership within pharmacy and also in the wider healthcare context.

Marian applied for the Clinical Fellow Scheme in order to build on and hone management and leadership skills. She is looking to learn about a different side to healthcare, which will allow her to impact national healthcare policy and strategy. Marian is keen to meet like-minded individuals and also senior colleagues in the field who she will be able to learn from and work with to achieve great results in number of topical healthcare areas.
