Mrs Mary Rehman

NHS Digital 2021/22
Chief Pharmaceutical Officer's Clinical Fellow Scheme 2021/22

Mary was the first cohort of the 4 year MPharm course at the University of Brighton. She then relocated to London to take up her pre-registration year at the Royal Brompton and has remained in London since.

Mary has had a varied career to-date. Immediately after qualifying, she was a resident pharmacist at Charing Cross Hospital, before moving into a specialised non-sterile production role. Subsequently, she undertook a variety of primary care roles involving work in general practice, across care boundaries, and with high-cost medicines. Her primary care work in particular is where she has seen the benefit of good digital communication within and between care settings.

In addition to her MPharm degree, Mary holds a post graduate clinical pharmacy diploma as well as an MSc (with merit) in Health Economics from City University, London. She has a particular interest in the study of Welfare Economics.

Her most recent post has been that of Principal Pharmacist at London North West Healthcare Trust for Community Services and Integrated Care. Here she has made improvements to the interface between providers and has a keen interest in End-of-Life care.

Mary is hands on in her approach to problems. During the COVID-19 pandemic she worked both as part of the Intensive Care Proning Team, and as a vaccinator for the public and staff at mass vaccination and hospital sites respectively.

Reason for applying for the scheme

Having worked across primary, secondary and tertiary care sectors within pharmacy, Mary hopes the fellowship year will help her view the healthcare system from a new perspective gaining insight into how key policy and decisions are made. Within NHS Digital, she hopes to make use of her interest in data sets and health economics to can drive better patient outcomes.

One of the pieces of work Mary is proud to have recently undertaken was to create and implement a digital Community Medicines Administration Record for her hospital Trust during the pandemic. This chart allows for it to be completed electronically and sent to the GP or District nursing team instantly at the point of discharge.

She is keen to bring her hands on practical pharmacy experience to NHS Digital and is looking forward to working across multidisciplinary teams, including those with non-healthcare design and digital development backgrounds.

Mary enjoys new challenges and embraces change readily. She is highly motivated within and outside of work. Later this year, she will take on the challenge of running the London Marathon for charity for the second time.
