Dr Matthew Beresford

NHS England / Academy of Medical Royal Colleges
National Medical Director's Clinical Fellow 2022/23

Matt studied medicine at the University of Oxford, intercalating in physiology and receiving several prizes for academic performance. After graduating, he completed his foundation years at the North Middlesex Hospital in London. Here, he was heavily involved in junior doctor representation, serving as junior doctor lead on the BMA local negotiating committee for two years. He was instrumental in rolling out exception reporting locally and showed genuine entrepreneurship by developing and launching a junior doctor website, receiving a HEE award for ‘outstanding contribution’.

Using his contacts at the North Middlesex Hospital, Matt helped establish a new management fellowship locally, returning in 2019 to take up this post full time. In this role, Matt began to expand his involvement in quality improvement, leading a nationally recognised project on blood test processing, as well as developing and delivering a QI teaching programme for foundation trainees.

Matt moved to the south west for his internal medicine training in late 2019. Here he continued to expand his work in QI, delivering regular training and acting as a project mentor for several projects locally.

Matt has a keen interest in using data to drive improvement and believes much can be done to harness the scientific, financial and productivity data already available to improve healthcare delivery.

Outside of work, he is a keen sportsman. He has played lacrosse and football to a high standard but in recent years has spent increasing time on two wheels, enjoying cycling (slowly!) up and down the hills of the south west.

Reason for applying for the scheme

Matt was keen to take time away from his busy clinical training to further develop his leadership skills. The chance to connect with and learn from other like-minded individuals who are passionate about leadership is exciting, as is the once-in-a-career opportunity to be mentored by national recognised clinical leaders. He hopes to gain a valuable insight into his own leadership style, absorbing as much as possible from others about how to be a successful leader and using this as a solid foundation for his future career

Matt is very excited to take up his joint post at NHS England and the Academy of Royal Medical Colleges, which provides an opportunity to work within two quite different leadership environments. As a junior medical registrar Matt is at the sharp end of service delivery and sees the practical implications of national strategy decisions on a day to day basis. Through working at these organisations he hopes to gain a better understanding of what informs policy decisions at a national level, how the success of these is evaluated and specifically how data can facilitate this process.

At a challenging time for the NHS, Matt firmly believes that good leadership, embodied by this scheme, is key to the ongoing sustainability of a free at the point of access model, and is relishing the prospect of the year to come.
