Dr Matthew Lee

NHSX
National Medical Director's Clinical Fellow 2022/23

Matthew is a physician, NHS Clinical Entrepreneur and founder with a passion for health innovation and medical education. He has a background in medical 3D printing for which he has presented and published his first-author research internationally. He also co-founded M3dicube, a national organisation that has taught >300 medical students and medical professionals 3D printing across the UK, and led the growth of the organisation to six cities with 25 team members.

Matthew completed his foundation training at St Thomas' Hospital in 2021 and undertook a MSc in healthcare technologies to develop technical expertise in deep learning and medical imaging. He continues his research in systems re-engineering of technologically agile clinical pathways at King’s College London in addition to his role as an NHS Clinical Entrepreneur, where he has developed skills in entrepreneurship and business strategy. Previously, he has held various leadership roles including Junior Doctor Representative and Operations Lead at the Guy's and St Thomas' Clinical Innovators Network, and has been recognised as a FEDIP as a 35 under 35 Future Digital Health Leader. Matthew will be joining the NHS Transformation Directorate to work on national digital strategy and digital clinical safety.

Matthew’s drive to develop deep knowledge at the intersection of clinical, technical, and leadership domains stems from a strong interest in technology, and a desire to make a difference to patients beyond clinical practice.

Reason for applying for the scheme

Matthew is driven to create bigger impact in the work and organisations he is part of. Through his previous experiences, he has proactively found opportunities to develop technical, clinical, and industrial insight into healthcare problems. Ultimately, he believes technology will enable the delivery of better, more efficient care and aspires to build a career as a digital pioneer to help the most people possible.

The fellowship represents an invaluable opportunity for Matthew to operate at the heart of policy development, working first-hand on national digital strategy and understanding healthcare and systemic change from a macroscopic perspective. It is a fantastic chance to learn leadership directly from senior leaders in high-impact organisations at the core of the National Healthcare System. Although early in his career, he chose the fellowship to shape a potential future career in management and healthcare strategy adjacent to his clinical practice. He also hopes to develop his abilities in leadership, project management and business strategy, while having personal impact on digital health policy.
