Miss Mehreen Kassam

NHS England - Transformation Directorate
Chief Sustainability Officer's Clinical Fellow 2022/23
Pharmacist

After completing her pre-registration pharmacist training year at Imperial College London, Mehreen pursued her interest in evidence-based medicine through working as a Formulary Pharmacist at both a local and regional level across North Central London. In these roles, she led on improved efficiency, transformation and service-level changes through medicines optimisation initiatives and the introduction of new medicines onto the formulary. With medicines accounting for a significant proportion of emissions within the NHS, medicines optimisation strategies are important to achieve net zero emissions. Mehreen has undertaken several projects to rationalise the number of medications on the formulary, including projects to deliver efficiency changes, promote reduction in overprescribing and remove medications that have a limited evidence base.

Mehreen is passionate for healthcare professionals to seek leadership opportunities, and is privileged to have been an Aylward Quality Improvement Prize winner, a co-author on a research publication and has developed lecture material for University College London. Mehreen is currently undertaking a Topol Digital Fellowship with Health Education England where she is leading on a digital transformation project at Moorfields Eye Hospital. Through this programme, Mehreen is developing her experience in sustainable system improvement within digital health and is exploring the theory of change in NHS transformation projects.

In her role as Chief Sustainability Officer's Clinical Fellow, Mehreen hopes to use her skills to make a meaningful contribution to the NHS achieving net zero and to develop her leadership skills and sustainability knowledge further.

Reason for applying for the scheme

Mehreen is excited by the unique opportunity to join a network of sustainability leaders, committed to championing sustainability and ensuring the NHS reaches its net zero ambition. Alongside contributing towards a critical healthcare priority, Mehreen will value the opportunity to develop her leadership skills from observing senior leaders, learning through workshops amongst a community of fellows, and leading on projects. Working within a national organisation will allow Mehreen to gain a unique insight into the wider healthcare system and current sustainability strategy.

Undertaking twelve months of focused professional development at this stage of Mehreen’s career will diversify her skillset and upskill her knowledge on sustainable healthcare. The fellowship will support her aspirations to lead on creating meaningful impacts, within the scheme and afterwards, and will equip her with the skills needed to put herself forward for future leadership roles.
