An update from the Medical Student Group

Sorry we’ve been keeping quiet lately – but exams are over – so it’s time for an update on our hard work over the year and to hear how you can get involved in our exciting future!

FMLM MSG Webinar - The Resilient Leader

Spearheaded by our own Ben Pearson-Stuttard and joined by FMLM’s Scottish contingent, Drs Iain Wallace, Gemma Sullivan and Rebecca Weerakoon, ‘The Resilient Leader’ was one of our most popular webinars. With the current climate within the NHS, the one question that frequently pops up is that of burn out, resilience and how can one survive the challenges posed by the work in the modern-day NHS. The evening proved to be very inspirational, full of practical tips and we look forward to hosting more webinars soon!

FMLM MSG Essay Prize

Now in its second year, Tara Dogra ran this year’s FMLM MSG Essay Prize which was once again, highly popular with medical students across the country. Tasked with determining “How medical schools should prepare medical students for leading the NHS?” the standard of entries made for an incredibly competitive shortlisting process. We were delighted to welcome Elizabeth Oke, Samuel Tribich, Nnamdi Nwuba, and Shivali Fulchand to present their essays to our esteemed judging panel, including last years winner and MSG member Lotte Elton. In the face of stiff competition, we are delighted to announce this year’s winner was Elizabeth Oke from St George’s University. You can read Elizabeth’s essay and hear more about Elizabeth’s experience and please do register to join Elizabeth and the team for the winner’s webinar on 3 May.

FMLM MSG Society of the Semester

Following on from Newcastle University’s Medical Leadership and Management Society who won our inaugural FMLM MSG Society of the Semester award, we are delighted to announce that Birmingham Medical Leadership Society have been awarded this latest accolade. Introduced to share good practice and acknowledge the most-engaged and pro-active medical leadership and management societies around the country please read about Birmingham’s experience in their exclusive blog. If you’re similarly doing great work, we’d love to hear about it. Please do engage via Facebook and Twitter and send us a medicalstudents [at] fmlm.ac.uk (message) outlining your achievements and why you think your society should be considered.

FMLM MSG and University Rep Recruitment

Medical students are the future of our profession and to increase engagement we’ve recently restructured and are looking to recruit new university and MSG representatives. If you’re interested in stepping up, taking a leading role and networking with FMLM Council and Trainee representatives in your area apply, take a look at the current roles available for a chance for you to be a part of our exciting future.

New representatives will officially take up their role on 28 June 2017 and are invited to attend an exclusive breakfast session at ‘Tomorrow’s leaders, today: Leadership and management in the undergraduate curriculum’ where we look forward to seeing as many medical students as possible to join teaching faculty from around the country for a one-day symposium focusing on leadership and management in the undergraduate curriculum, hosted by FMLM in partnership with Health Education England and NHS Leadership Academy.

Thank you

Thank you to everyone for engaging with FMLM over recent months. It’s been a pleasure working with the MSG, and I would like to particularly thank Lotte Elton and Ben Pearson-Stuttard who are stepping down with me this year as we graduate and move on.

Congratulations to Jonathan Gibb who will be taking over as Chair and Tara Dogra who will be taking up the role as ‘Think-Tank Lead’ – I wish them, and their soon-to-be recruited committee members, the best of luck for the future.

I look forward to seeing you at ‘Tomorrow’s Leaders, today’.

Maria is a final year medical student at Imperial College London. Her passion for improving healthcare delivery led her to Imperial College Business School, where she obtained an intercalated degree in Medical Management. It is during that year that Maria was inspired to fight for a better, more efficient NHS - and there is no better place to start than at the very grassroots of care delivery - with her fellow medical students.

Her other academic interests include medical innovation, which led her to Harvard University where she took classes in stem cells and tissue engineering for a term. In her spare time, Maria is busy travelling the world, baking in her kitchen or exploring different cuisines London has to offer.
