Health and Social Care Secretary announces publication of FMLM leadership review

The Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Matt Hancock, has announced the publication of an independent FMLM review into the barriers facing clinicians moving into leadership positions.

Matt Hancock made the announcement of the publication of Barriers and enablers for clinicians moving into senior leadership roles in his keynote speech on day two of Leaders in Healthcare 2018. He said:

“Today, I’m publishing the review by the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management into removing obstacles to clinicians becoming managers.

And I want to reduce barriers for people who can serve our NHS who have experience outside. We now know what some of those obstacles are:

  • lack of a clear career path into leadership roles.
  • lack of exposure to management and leadership responsibilities as people progress.”

The Secretary of State emphasised the importance of leadership at all levels. A key issue highlighted by the review is the perception that being a leader and being a clinician are incompatible.

The review, commissioned by the former Health Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, is available from the Department of Health and Social Care.
