New peer support programme for senior clinicians

NHS Improving Quality (NHS IQ) and the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management (FMLM) are to pilot a ground-breaking strategic peer support programme designed to support senior clinicians in NHS trusts.

NHS IQ and FMLM recognise that to successfully respond to the recommendations made in the Berwick Report into NHS patient safety, and the current pressures in the health and care system, senior clinical leaders need to be supported to confidently respond to challenging and complex service issues.

Senior clinical leaders who require support in delivering service transformation in their trusts are being invited to participate in the initiative.

The programme will pair participants with 'expert peers', who have either been through a similar process or have proven experience of successfully leading transformational change or improvement. They will also have previous experience of mentoring at a senior level. Applications for expert peers are also being taken.

Peer support will be offered to clinicians with directorate or board level responsibility who need expertise and guidance to deliver significant service change and have a strong commitment to, and interest in, quality improvement.

The programme will consist of supported peer meetings and development days where the paired individuals can come together to share their experience. The programme will commence in January and continue to September 2015, and will be supported by BMJ Quality, the Chartered Quality Institute and FMLM’s regional quality teams.

Professor Moira Livingston, Clinical Director of Improvement Capability at NHS IQ, said: “This is an exciting programme that aims to strengthen leadership capability and to help deliver lasting quality improvements. By pairing up senior clinical leaders who need support with service transformation with ‘expert peers’, we aim to give them the knowledge and confidence they need to drive their organisations forward.

“I strongly encourage senior clinicians to come forward and benefit from this initiative.”

Mr Peter Lees, Chief Executive and Medical Director at FMLM, said: “We have long recognised the need to support our senior medical leaders, who are often facing unprecedented challenges within their organisations or services. This programme is a welcome opportunity to begin to do this, through peer support and facilitated workshops, and realise the potential of our workforce to create a sustainable NHS.”

The initial programme is a small-scale ‘proof of concept’ project developed with a limited number of partners. Based on the evaluation findings, the programme has the potential to be rolled out more widely across health and social care.

The deadline for applications is Wednesday 14th January 2015, midnight.
