Ten years of FMLM

Professor Mayur Lakhani

FMLM Chair

I would like to acknowledge the extraordinary effort and compassion of FMLM members and fellows in some of the toughest conditions over the past ten months. At such a difficult time for healthcare globally, it comes as no surprise to me that the selfless commitment of clinicians around the world has been much in evidence. I would also like to remind you that FMLM is here to help with support and guidance whenever you need it.

This year, 2021, marks ten years since the founding of FMLM and we will be marking this anniversary at key points throughout the year. The past decade has been an extraordinary story of growth and resilience for the Faculty. Set up in the wake of several independent inquiries and reports that cited a failure of leadership, and the need to involve clinicians more in the running of our health services, FMLM had, from the very beginning, the singular aim of professionalising medical leadership to improve patient care. These celebrations will begin later this month as we mark the February 2011 meeting of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, where the establishment of FMLM was formally agreed.

This summer will also mark ten years of managing the national clinical fellow schemes, which go from strength to strength. An incredible 302 people have now graduated from these schemes, after spending a year out-of-programme working and learning at some of the highest levels in our health services. We will be celebrating this achievement with one eye on the next stage of the schemes due to launch in September, the expansion of which is a testament to the FMLM team that has managed the clinical fellow schemes so well.

Towards the end of this year, we will mark a decade since the first founding members joined FMLM. This will be the main celebration of the year, indicative of the fundamental role that our members have played in our successes throughout the decade and will play in future successes to come. Plans have yet to be finalised, but you can expect a celebration of what has been achieved by FMLM and its members – many of whom are now fellows - over the past ten years, and in particular the challenging past ten months.

Anniversaries not only give us an opportunity to look back and celebrate our achievements but also allow us look forward to a world beyond the pandemic. Your impact on patient care has been enormous through compassionate, collaborative leadership and developing high performing teams. But now we need to go even further and I would like your help in this. I would therefore like to flag that the FMLM team will be developing its strategy for the next five years, throughout 2021. FMLM members will, of course, form a crucial part of that, so you can expect to be involved. We, in turn, hope that you will help shape our future direction by engaging with the formation of this strategy so that we can continue to build the profession of medical leadership and promote excellence.

Finally, may I, on behalf of the FMLM team, extend our best wishes to you and your loved ones as you navigate what continues to be a very trying time for everyone involved in delivering healthcare services. FMLM is here to support you, so I hope you will not hesitate to contact us at any point now or in the future.
