GP membership continues to grow

Leadership opportunities for GPs

The campaign to provide quality leadership support to doctors in general practice has helped to increase the number of FMLM members who are GPs

It is common knowledge that many GPs have reported being overwhelmed by their workload both within and beyond their practice and have highlighted the need for survival skills.  In response, FMLM is working through the GP steering group which has been established to evolve leadership support for current and aspiring GP leaders to bolster their personal and collective resilience in their scope of practice.

Following a successful workshop session last year to develop a blueprint GP career map, the GP steering group is now working towards inspiring, supporting and equipping GP members to explore a range of leadership opportunities. As a result of these initiatives, GP delegates at the national conference fedback that "there is definitely a need to focus on primary care" and pointed out the "improved awareness of career paths open to me in general practice".

A range of benefits is available to GP members, including:

  • an online GP leadership group
  • webinars
  • dedicated GP facing sessions at FMLM events and conferences
  • leadership development workshops
  • appraisal guidance
  • FMLM careers service

The steering group, whose members are drawn from all career stages, is currently establishing a network of FMLM GP champions across the country. Please contact primarycare [at] fmlm.ac.uk to let us know if you would like to get involved.
