Dr Nicholas Turner

NHS England
National Medical Director's Clinical Fellow 2022/23

Nicholas studied medicine at the University of Oxford, completing a BA in Medical Sciences and graduating with distinction. During his studies he received prizes for both the best mark and for showing the most care and concern for patients in his first clinical exam. Whilst at university, Nicholas was president of the Clinical Medical Students’ Society, managing a twenty person committee and overseeing a clubhouse extension worth over £200,000 alongside his studies.

He undertook his foundation programme in South London, working at University Hospital Lewisham and St Thomas’ Hospital.

Nicholas spent the following year working as a clinical fellow at St Thomas’ Hospital in both critical care and toxicology. During this time he took on the role of junior doctor representative for critical care and was nominated for a teaching excellence award. Whilst a toxicology clinical fellow, he worked in a newly established detoxification unit – the Addictions Clinical Care Suite. He helped to establish new clinical policy and ongoing quality improvement projects to improve care for patients undergoing inpatient detoxification. He continues to work with this unit and its ongoing projects.

Reason for applying for the scheme

Nicholas is delighted to have been appointed as the National Medical Director’s Clinical Fellow for Clinical Workforce Productivity at NHS England.

Having witnessed first-hand the importance of good medical leadership whilst working as a junior doctor, Nicholas is motivated to develop his own leadership ability. He is keen to learn how policy in a national body impacts the acute hospital setting, and to compare his experience of leadership to that in a non-clinical setting.

The National Medical Director’s Clinical Fellow Scheme provides an unprecedented opportunity for Nicholas to develop competencies as a leader early in his career, and he hopes to be able to continue to build on this foundation well into the future.

Nicholas has a particular interest in the welfare of colleagues, and is motivated to seek out and assist in initiatives that will contribute to meaningful change for staff and patients. He is excited by the prospect of working with like-minded clinical fellows, from various stages of their careers, to help achieve these goals.
