Dr Peter Davey

NHS England - Transformation Directorate
Chief Sustainability Officer's Clinical Fellow 2022/23
Doctor

Peter studied medicine at Newcastle University, after which he took on various clinical posts in the UK, Australia and Africa, as well as completing a Certificate in Medical Education and Diploma in Tropical Medicine.

After this he entered public health specialty training in the North West of England, where he has been since 2018. Peter completed his Master’s in Public Health at the University of Liverpool in 2019; his dissertation focusing on young people’s perception of active travel.

Throughout public health training, Peter has provided public health input for various different organisations, including Local Authorities, the Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership and the Greater Manchester Violence Reduction Unit.

Throughout this time, Peter has been interested in Public Health and Sustainability, leading on work to reduce Nitrous Oxide use in a local hospital, acting as Sustainability Representative for the North West Registrar Network and inaugural chair of the North West Public Health Registrar Sustainability Network.

In his spare time, Peter likes to enjoy the outdoors, particularly running and hill walking. He lives in Manchester.

Reason for applying for the scheme

As a future public health consultant, the myriad health effects of climate change are going to dominate Peter’s working professional life. Not only this, but climate change will already widen existing unfair health inequalities that exist in the UK and worldwide. Peter believes passionately in our moral and professional responsibility as healthcare professionals to lead on and embed sustainable practice within the health system, in order to reduce emissions and the effects of those emissions on health.

Peter also wants to develop his leadership skills at a national level: seeing how senior leaders influence and make decisions on healthcare policy at a national level on net zero will be invaluable, as well as how they navigate the many challenges that this presents. Developing competency in systems leadership is crucial to public health practice, and Peter will apply these insights to future senior management roles.

The NHS Green Plan sets out a clear vision and systems thinking that is sorely needed in any ambitious systems change project. Peter wants to apply this ambition and vision back to other parts of the health and social care system where leadership and innovation could make a positive impact on climate change and net zero action.

Peter also want to take learning on sustainable processes and methodologies from this fellowship to his day job in public health, especially around changing the culture and behaviour of organisations and staff.
