Medical Chief Executive transition guide

If you’re even thinking about taking on chief executive responsibilities you will know that you don’t have a lot of medical role models in the system to look to for advice. You are thinking of walking a relatively untraveled way with few familiar signposts or directions.

Whilst the need to be able to act decisively and lead with little precedent is true for any Chief Executive, in some ways pretty much the nature of the job, it is sometimes a more challenging issue for the medically qualified applicant.

We have canvassed in the same way as the FMLM papers on Clinical Director and Medical Director, this time seeking the opinions of current medical incumbents in the Chief Executive role. We have asked them for their top tips to watch for on taking over the job and also asked them what they wished they had known.

We have asked what support or development would have been helpful, or was useful at the start of their journey.
