Newly qualified GP transition guide

A standard vocational training scheme for general practice provides a trainee with plenty of clinical acumen and skills to manage a primary care consultation and these skills are formally tested and can be validated.

However, the scheme’s ability to prepare an individual for the wider role of general practitioner can be variable, often dependent on the skill of each trainer and the training priorities of the trainee.

In an FMLM survey of GPs conducted in September 2013, nearly 80 per cent of GPs state that their GP training failed to cover leadership and management adequately, with the majority believing that it should be covered better. While this assessment is a subjective one, there is a risk that GPs are sent out as independent practitioners, ill-prepared for what lies ahead.

This document seeks to redress the balance and provide a starting point into the difficult transition to become a newly qualified GP.

FMLM would like to thank Dr Chris Ferdinand for writing this important transition document.
