By Charles Kenney
CRC Press
November 2010
ISBN-13: 978-1563273759
Priced about £25 with online retailers, slightly cheaper for ebooks (Kindle version available). Also reviewed by Lesley-Anne Smith (guest reviewer)

Written as a retrospective, this title uses first-hand accounts to tell the story of how the adoption of the Toyota Production System from Japan led to the transformation of Virginia Mason Medical Center (Seattle, USA) in its aim to provide the ‘perfect patient experience’, with significant improvements also gained for the organisation as a whole.

A must read

Both motivating and reassuring in times of difficulty, this book shows that there is no quick fix, no silver bullet and no change without pain. Change is hard, it takes time and it takes a leader who can stay the course. Compare the VM CEO tenure with that of an NHS Trust CEO. Without time even a great leader will fail. Passion and commitment takes courage and support and this book shows not only how to succeed but why so many of the NHS initiatives fail. I would recommned it to anyone.
