Robert Wilson

We interviewed Robert Wilson, retired consultant surgeon and Medical Director and Founding Senior Fellow of FMLM, on his career and why FMLM Fellowship is so significant for medical leaders.

Why is medical leadership so important?

I believe that good leadership is the key to achieving excellence for our patients. Additionally we need good leadership to set a good example, to set a strategy for excellence and hopefully to inspire others.

How does effective medical leadership improve patient care?

It’s a huge influence on the past, present and future quality of doctors, nurses and other NHS staff. Allows one to hold to account others, and helps one establish credibility with decision makers and those with influence.

What inspired you to join FMLM and how important do you see FMLM in enabling you to fulfil your leadership aspirations?

Having recognised a personal development need in leadership I had worked for some years with our MD/CEO Peter Lees before FMLM began so was in the privileged position of knowing him and being inspired by his knowledge of and commitment to leadership.

What motivated you to apply to become an FMLM Fellow and why do you think FMLM Fellowship is important?

Validation of leadership credentials. Great focus for learning and sharing experience. Leaders are stronger together.

Can you tell us about an individual whose leadership has inspired you during your career?

I have the privilege of working with a number of young people from deprived areas and never lose the opportunity to discuss leadership. Very many of them are truly inspirational. I’d also include a number of nurses I’ve had the privilege of working with and have already mentioned Peter Lees. Finally, I’d mention Jim Collins and Michael West whose seminal works have introduced hugely important factual information into the word of leadership.

FMLM Fellowship exists at three levels to reflect different degrees of leadership experience: Senior FellowFellow, and Associate FellowRead more about FMLM Fellowship and apply to become a fellow.
