Shazia studied at Kings College London and completed her pre-registration and residency year at Kings College Hospital before locating to the Midlands where she has worked for various sectors including secondary care in different specialities before taking on a role as the Critical care and anaesthetics pharmacist In University Hospitals of Leicester, primary care and independent contracts to deliver on specific projects around care home medicine management and recently commissioned to provide a specific project for a primary care network for patients on opioid and other medicines of high dependency. The work with social care staff led Shazia to develop and deliver training to domiciliary and non domiciliary staff with her RPS accredited training package. She currently works for a Clinical commissioning group during which time she has held post as interim Head of Prescribing. Her recent experience is with governance, the CCG PGD lead, she is keen to ensure implementation and delivery on national strategies recently her work on antimicrobial prescribing for which her collaborative work with other local CCG’s, local authority, the care home sector and secondary care ensured a local health approach to tackling inappropriate management of UTI’s in older people, this work received 2 national wards and was shortlisted for the BMJ award. She holds a MSc in Clinical Pharmacy.

Reason for applying for the scheme

Shazia is passionate about driving initiatives to improve patient outcomes and works with tireless enthusiasm with work in recent projects including antimicrobial prescribing, reducing inappropriate opioid prescribing, work with stakeholders to hold event in polypharmacy and with other teams around medicines safety. The reason she applied for the CPhO clinical fellowship was to gain an understanding from a national perspective on how such policies are developed and an opportunity to learn and work with national leaders on such projects. She has had a local exposure to a number of these national organisations and relishes the opportunity to work in collaboration at a system level. This opportunity will allow her exposure to other leadership opportunities and develop her own leadership style with the unique opportunities and exposure to national leaders. She aspires to hold a leadership role in the NHS .
