Dr Theo Bartholomew

NHS England
National Medical Director's Clinical Fellow 2022/23

Theo is a GP Registrar based in Surrey. He graduated from UCL Medical School in 2015, receiving a First Class Honours in Neuroscience during his intercalated BSc year. Theo undertook his Foundation Training at Chelsea and Westminster NHS Foundation Trust where he was awarded a ‘Teaching Hero’ Award from Imperial College Medical School and a Merit Award for ‘Outstanding Contribution’ from the Foundation School. In addition, Theo worked as a Foundation Doctor Representative where he contributed to the management structure and decision-making process of Foundation Training in London via faculty committees and pan-London Operational Groups. He also completed the Edward Jenner Leadership Programme during this time.

Theo subsequently moved to the USA where undertook a Masters in Bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania, having been awarded a Thouron scholarship. Here, his work focused on rationing and resource allocation in healthcare and cost-effectiveness analysis. He has since published multiple articles on subjects including breast cancer screening and outcomes-based pharmaceutical contracts.

After completing his Masters, Theo spent two years working as a life sciences strategy consultant in Germany. In this role he worked on global pharmaceutical projects across several domains including launch strategy, patient-reported outcome measures and digital transformation.

Theo returned to clinical medicine during the COVID-19 pandemic to take up a GP training post. He has recently completed a NICE scholarship during which he developed an interest in population health management, contributing to Surrey Heartland’s frailty and anticipatory care strategies.

Reason for applying for the scheme

As someone who has worked across a combination of clinical, academic and consulting roles, Theo was drawn to the scheme because he felt that many of the opportunities offered within it sat excitingly at the intersection of these three disciplines.

Theo was also motivated to participate in the scheme to meet and work alongside individuals from a diverse range of backgrounds who share the same passion for addressing the great health challenges of our time. He intends to use his experiences from the scheme to provide mentorship for other colleagues back in the NHS.

Theo is very excited to be joining the Primary Care Team within NHS England, a team that is naturally close to his heart as a GP Registrar. He hopes to work on the development of the new GP contract as well as on primary care workforce and service redesign for future-proofing the NHS.
