Mr Videha Sharma

NHSX
National Medical Director's Clinical Fellow 2022/23

Originally from Rotterdam in the Netherlands, Videha is currently based in Manchester with his wife, Zerin, a clinical geneticist, and their one-year-old daughter Anaya. Videha studied medicine at the University of Nottingham. After completing foundation and core training in the Mersey deanery, Videha is now based in Manchester as a specialty trainee in general surgery, specialising in kidney transplantation.

Most recently he has completed a PhD in Health Informatics from the University of Manchester. His research looked at the role of health IT to support kidney transplant services in the UK. The work helped understand current NHS IT infrastructures and explored socio-technical barriers to data sharing across organisational boundaries. During this time, he was also awarded a Topol Digital Health Fellowship and has built expertise in interoperability, user-centred design and digital transformation.

Videha is an avid supporter of team science and multi-disciplinary collaboration. He believes that involving front line clinical professionals and patients (those with lived experience of delivering and receiving care) is critical to the design of services and solutions that meet today’s complex healthcare needs. Videha enjoys working in diverse teams and unifying individuals towards a common goal. He speaks regularly at clinical, digital health and UX events and appreciates continued feedback to foster his growth and development.

Reason for applying for the scheme

Having developed a niche bridging clinical practice and digital health, the FMLM clinical fellow scheme is an opportunity for Videha to build on his experiences and fulfil a potential to support system-wide transformation. Developing effective and compassionate leadership skills are an essential quality to achieve this ambition. Through the FMLM fellowship Videha hopes to work with national leaders and shape his personal leadership style.

The scheme will allow Videha to work and learn across disciplines, incorporating experiences from NHS and non-NHS healthcare organisations. As the NHS moves through increasingly tumultuous times, a focus on open ideation, collaboration and shared learning is required to understand and solve challenges. The professional network offered through the fellowship will provide an environment to make new connections and strive towards a collective vision for the healthcare leadership.
