National Medical Director's Clinical Fellow 2022/23

Will Sacre studied Medicine at King’s College London, before undertaking Foundation Programme Training in the Oxfordshire Deanery, followed by Core Medical Training in the East Midlands. After attaining Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP), he worked as a Specialty Registrar in Geriatrics at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, before being appointed as a Trust-level Leadership and Management Clinical Fellow, successfully attaining both a Post-Graduate Certificate in Medical Education and the Royal College of Physicians ‘Doctors as Leaders’ accreditation during this role. Prior to commencing the National Medical Director’s Clinical Fellow Scheme post, Will has completed two years of Core Radiology training.

Reason for applying for the scheme

Will’s interest in the leadership and management element of clinical medicine developed whilst working as a medical registrar, observing the importance of these skills for the effective operational integrity of a ward / on-call team. This grew into a passion during a Trust-based Leadership and Management Clinical Fellowship, where the opportunity arose to independently develop and lead on both workforce and patient safety projects, with the outcome of several of these having subsequently been presented at both national and international academic conferences. An active desire to pursue this interest further resulted in him applying for this scheme.

The National Medical Director’s Clinical Fellow Scheme provides the unique opportunity for integration and active participation within an arm’s length body, whilst receiving direct mentorship from a senior organisational leader. As a fellow within the workforce team of the NHS England Medical Directorate, Will hopes to further build upon his previous leadership experiences, with specific focus upon the inception and promotion of robust strategies aimed at growing and sustaining a skilled diverse NHS workforce, in order to adequately meet the future health needs of the populace. He is looking forward to networking with healthcare leaders and peer clinical fellows, so as to gain enhanced understanding and insight into the overall structure and fundaments of the National Health Service, thereby generating both personal and professional development.
