Dr Adam Thomas

Clinical Fellow, General Medical Council (GMC)

Following graduation from Keele University Medical School in 2012, Adam Thomas completed Foundation training in the West Midlands before heading to the North West Deanery to undertake Core Surgical Training. He then had the opportunity to work as a Clinical Teaching Fellow at Keele University and to study for a Masters in Medical Education. After some consideration he then decided to follow a career in General Practice in the West Midlands.

He has gained some experience in leadership and management as a core trainee representative on the Core Surgical National Recruitment Office Committee, undertaking the role of trainee representative on his Local Medical Committee (LMC) and forming part of the working group for developing his General Practice Vocational Training Scheme. His role as a Clinical Teaching Fellow involved sitting on the admission interview panels for the University, writing assessment content, examining in OSCEs and delivering bedside and lecture-based teaching.

His continuing interest in medical leadership and management has evolved along with his passion for medical education. Gaining practical teaching experience and studying education theory for his Masters has encouraged him to incorporate education as an integral part of his future career plans. However, to be an effective educator he understands the important contribution of strong leadership and management skills.

Adam Thomas is acutely aware that as a potential future GP partner, he must develop a sound knowledge of the ever changing financial and political landscape influencing our healthcare system. It is also vital to be effective at managing people and understanding how the complex balance of economics and politics influences the day to day running of a practice to ensure the delivery of optimum care for our patients.

His realisation that to be an effective educator one must develop strong leadership and management skills, combined with his experience as a clinician in a variety of hospitals and primary care settings during his training, has made him a passionate advocate of the need for more doctors as leaders and managers. He wants to be a part of ensuring our rapidly changing NHS is fit for purpose to develop healthcare professionals and provide the very best care patients for generations to come.

When he became aware of the FMLM National Medical Directors Clinical Fellowship scheme, he knew that this would provide a unique and invaluable opportunity to witness leadership and management skills at the highest level within some of the most influential organisations working within the NHS. He hopes to experience as much as possible, assimilate the knowledge and begin to develop the skills necessary to achieve his future goals and to make a positive contribution to medicine as an effective leader, educator and clinician.
