Dr Garry Davenport

Clinical Fellow, Macmillan Cancer Support

Garry Davenport is an ST7 anaesthetics trainee. He graduated from the University of Leicester in 2008. After completing his Foundation Programme in the East Midlands, he moved to the East of England for his ACCS and speciality training.

Alongside his clinical interests of Perioperative Medicine and Obstetric Anaesthesia, he has been interested in medical education and management and leadership since medical school. During his specialty training, he has organised and facilitated a local ‘buddy’ system for novice anaesthetists in addition to a regional FRCA OSCE training session. He also led several projects which have been presented as posters at regional and national meetings, and has been a trainee lead for a national NIHR portfolio multi-centre research study.

During the last year, he completed the Cambridge Chief Resident Management and Leadership Development Programme (which is led by Addenbrookes Hospital in collaboration with the Cambridge Judge Business School). During this year he attended a monthly teaching programme on a range of management and leadership topics. Chief Residents are expected to lead a quality improvement project within their departments and act as trainee representatives within their trusts.

Alongside this programme, Garry Davenport was also the regional trainee representative for the East Anglian Obstetric Anaesthesia Group. As part of this role, he chaired the trainee meeting at the EAOAG ASM, created an education resource and acted as the trainees’ voice at the regional Obstetric Anaesthesia Leads meetings.

Outside of medicine, he enjoys spending time with his partner at the theatre (particularly seeing new writers or immersive pieces), reading and is currently aiming to improve his fitness.

Garry Davenport is delighted to have been appointed to the National Medical Director’s Clinical Fellowship and to be working with Macmillan Cancer Support. This year will provide an exciting opportunity to gain a bird's eye view of the NHS and an understanding of how outside organisations influence the NHS to improve the experience of patients. He also hopes to develop a better understanding of development and implementation of projects on a national scale and to bring the skills that he learns back into the NHS during his advanced year of speciality training and on into his consultant career.
