Dr Keith Gomes Pinto

Clinical Fellow, NHS Digital

Keith lived in 5 other countries prior to settling in the UK. This has seen him complete his medical training between Charles University, Prague and Masaryk University, Brno, graduating in 2008. He completed foundation training in Oxford before embarking on a career as a general surgeon reaching ST5 level in the South West of England. In 2016, he decided on a career change and joined the Severn GP training programme where he is currently an ST3.

Having developed a passion for QI in his early training years, Keith went on to complete a post-graduate certification in Healthcare Leadership, Management and Quality Improvement in 2018. Locally, he helped run QI conferences, taught QI methodology to healthcare professionals and GP trainees and helped improve GP practice systems and processes. He was the catalyst in driving change at one of the GP surgeries. The project he initiated helped not only improve patient care and safety, but created a culture of openness and transparency that has remained sustainable. He won an award for System-Wide Improvement at the Bristol Patient Safety Conference in 2018.

Keith was recognised by NHS England and presented his project at the National Primary Care Improvers Conference in London. On the back of this, he was one of few GP trainees to be trained by the ‘Time For Care’ GP Development Programme and has joined the Primary Care Improvement Faculty. As a result, he is keen to apply the Change Model – Our Shared Purpose in helping drive change both regionally and nationally. The Next Generation GP Programme and Professional and Generic Skills Course have helped with networking opportunities and meeting like-minded individuals.

Keith has a major interest in the understanding the tensions between Leadership and Management and how they are both vital in helping influence the culture of organisations.

Keith succeeded in obtaining his first choice with NHS Digital and will be working closely with Dr Tom Foley, one of the clinical leads and a previous FMLM Fellow. He is thrilled at the opportunity to witness first hand how NHS Digital collect, analyse and disseminate data with a view to improving patient care. He hopes to obtain a better understanding of the complex system-wide roles played by the major NHS organisations in influencing patient safety and care as they manoeuvre their way through an ever-changing political landscape and financial pressures.  In the long-term, he is keen to help bridge the gap between primary and secondary care in a role that seeks to help clinicians understand the common pressures and barriers they all face.
