Dr Matthew Brown

Clinical Fellow, Bupa

Matthew is a radiology registrar on the St Bartholomew’s and Royal London training programme.

He completed his medical degree at the University of Edinburgh in 2015, achieving numerous prizes. During his studies, he undertook an intercalated degree at Imperial College London in Immunity and Infection (Immunology) achieving first class honours.

Throughout medical school, Matthew was involved in medical politics; successfully being elected national chair of the BMA Scottish Medical Student Committee. In this role, he changed the policy on the GMCs proposed Medical Licensing Assessment (MLA), formulating and gaining support for a novel alternative. Matthew was also involved in discussions at the highest level of Scottish Government, including with the Cabinet Secretary for Health and on the Medical Undergraduate Group (responsible for setting the number of medical school places in Scotland).

His postgraduate training has been undertaken initially in Bristol and Taunton – where he chaired the regional Junior Doctor’s committee, with responsibility for ensuring correct implementation of the controversial 2016 junior doctor’s contract. He has also spent time outside the UK, working in Wellington Regional Hospital, New Zealand and obtaining a scholarship to conduct neuro-oncology research in Montreal, Canada.Whilst at Bupa, Matthew is keen to learn how to successfully implement commercial innovations: through water-tight clinical governance, contracting and sustainable financing, with a view to creating a seamless patient journey.
