Dr Peter Scolding

Clinical Fellow, NHS England and NHS Improvement

Peter studied medicine at UCL, taking two years out to complete a BSc in International Health and an MA in Diplomacy. He did his medical elective in Sudan. He completed his Foundation years in London and Luton, before taking two further years away from training.

During his F3 and F4 years, he worked in a rural District General Hospital in South Africa for 6 months, visited Sudan twice, developing a partnership with the Mycetoma Research Centre, and attended the World Health Assembly where Mycetoma was added to the list of Neglected Tropical Diseases. He completed the Diploma for Tropical Medicine and Hygiene at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. He did his Core Medical Training in London, at Chelsea, the Royal Brompton and Charing Cross, and got his MRCP in 2019. Throughout training, Peter has actively developed quality improvement skills and experience, applying these to improve safety within clinical pathways, patient handover, hygiene and outpatient services efficiency.

Whilst at medical school, Peter led the Friends of Medécins sans Frontières student movement in the UK for two years. He also led the team delivering a UCL campaign week focused on Darfur. Peter developed further leadership experience as a BMA Junior Doctor representative, becoming a member of the national Junior Doctor Committee and Chair of North Thames Regional Junior Doctor Committee during Core training.

Peter would like to learn more about health systems leadership, to develop a feel for the organisational, technical and political aspects of achieving change. He believes that organisational culture is crucial to improving performance and is looking forward to developing a sense how different national organisations behave on the inside. Peter is aiming to develop the skills and behaviours necessary to become effective at a system-level through working with, and observing leaders, by taking on responsibility and making the most of whatever opportunities arise during the year.
