About Me

I am a GP, GP appraiser, medical educator, ex-MDU medicolegal advisor, qualified barrister and ex-medical director who now specialises in life, career and leadership coaching and mentoring doctors of all grades and specialties.

I am married to a Maxillofacial Surgery Consultant with whom I have two young daughters who keep me on my toes outside of work! My top five character strengths as assessed through the 'Values in Action (VIA) Institute on Character' survey are, in order: Honesty, Fairness, Justice, Love and Humour.

As a doctor and ex-medical leader, I have experienced first hand the consequences of working within poorly-led environments, and this has fuelled my passion to work with medical leaders and healthcare executives to enable them to promote positive cultures within both their immediate teams and wider organisations. I also have expertise in helping doctors being bullied and those going through disciplinary processes.

I coach because I firmly believe that the process can make a hugely positive and transformational impact on the lives of my coachees, who I want to be as happy and fulfilled as they possibly can be.

Adam is also the creator and host of the ‘Inspiring Women Leaders’ podcast (https://inspiringwomenleaders.buzzsprout.com), the podcast about leadership by women only, from which everyone can learn. The podcast aims to showcase the extensive leadership knowledge and practical skills of its incredible guests and to both inspire and educate its listeners, helping them acquire the practical know-how necessary to become better leaders themselves

Coaching Process

Firstly, I am a very client-centred coach and I think that my aspiration to be a generative listener is a key part of that. All day long at work and sometimes at home too, medical leaders have people wanting to talk to or even at them, with very few of those interactions offering them the time or a safe space to be listened to; the coaching space is where they have that essential opportunity for their problems or goals to be truly heard.

I am a big believer in practising evidence-based coaching to achieve my clients’ desired outcomes and my preferred disciplines are those of positive psychology and neuroscience. My clients can thus expect some discussions around compassionate servant leadership and embracing the growth mindset and emotional intelligence paradigms for example, and the psychological and neuroscientific evidence underpinning these and other similar concepts, in order to reach their goals.

I always conduct my coaching sessions with a strong sense of honesty, fairness, love and humour and a complete lack of judgement as per my core values, in addition to rigorously adhering to ethical principles.

What can I offer you?

I adhere to the International Coach Federation’s Code of Ethics because I want to be recognised as a coach who maintains high professional and ethical standards; part of this involves completing a certain number of CPD hours annually, something I am extremely happy to do as a lifelong learner and as someone who wants my clients to know I keep up-to-date.

I offer the full range of teamwork, leadership and executive coaching support, but, as a doctor myself, I also know we are not generic creatures and that there are some problems which are more prevalent in medics e.g. Imposter Syndrome, perfectionism, lack of self-compassion, lack of assertiveness, difficulties with conflict management, experiencing overwhelm etc., and I have experience of and expertise in all of these.

I always adopt a values-centred and ethical approach to my coaching practice. Wherever possible, I use the available evidence to help doctors and medical leaders achieve their personal and professional goals, so they can lead happier, more fulfilling lives. I promise to work hard to achieve a deep level of mutual trust with my clients, making our professional relationship as effective as possible, so that their results can be truly transformational.

Testimonials

"Dr Adam Harrison has mentored and coached me since June 2020. In that time he has guided me through personal and professional challenges, and offered support in a kind and non-judgemental manner. With the shift in my perspective that Adam has helped me achieve, I have pursued and secured two new roles in employment, furthered my education, honed my skills in self-management of my career and set up a website to facilitate my moves in the near future. I look forward to continuing to work with Adam to optimise my career in the future and I have no hesitation in recommending his coaching services to my peers and beyond. Thank you Adam for all your efforts." GP

"I have been working with Dr Harrison since June 2020. Adam has acted in a coaching/mentorship role. He is professional and client centred in his approach, utilising his own personal and professional experience. His sessions have been stimulating and targeted in supporting career development. He has worked hard to understand the current difficulties faced and has suggested realistic evidenced based interventions. He has a broad knowledge of his field and is able to share his enthusiasm for this. His feedback has been timely and supportive. It has been a pleasure to work with Dr Harrison and I would have no hesitation in recommending him to others in Medical Professions" Core psychiatry trainee.

"The three things I would like to say about my coach are: knowledgeable; knows the insight of a person; engaging and warm.
