Revalidation and appraisal

FMLM supports members to prepare for and gain value from their annual appraisal by providing a range of resources and services based on the Leadership and management standards for medical professionals.

These services enable doctors, and particularly those in medical leadership roles, to demonstrate the important contribution of effective leadership and management to improving patient care and that they are worthy of patient, staff and public confidence.

Revalidation and appraisal

What is it?

FMLM provides appraisal and revalidation guidance, example portfolios, completed personal development plans (PDPs) and a summary of the appraisal discussion, as well as a revalidation helpdesk.

What it means for doctors

The great majority of doctors with leadership and management aspects to their scope of practice will be practising in their primary specialty. The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges provides a single point of contact for signposting to the specialty advice on appraisal published by each of the medical royal colleges and specialist faculties for doctors in their respective fields of practice. Doctors in leadership positions should consult this clinical specialty guidance, as well as the FMLM guidance.

How it works

FMLM is a Designated Body (DB) as defined in the Medical Profession (Responsible Officers) Regulations 2010 and is specifically named as a DB in the Medical Profession (Responsible Officers) (Amendment) Regulations 2013. The majority of FMLM members will not have a prescribed connection to the Faculty for the purposes of revalidation, as their DB will usually be their employer or will relate to their clinical practice, as described by the GMC.

In order to ensure safe and high quality care for the patients in their charge, as well as meeting the legal requirements relating to the revalidation of doctors, healthcare organisations are required to support the appraisal process. Further guidance can be found in FMLM's policy on revalidation. The process of revalidation continues to evolve and will be reviewed by the GMC.
