FMLM online conference: Lead, Adapt, Thrive, hosted by FMLM Northern Ireland

This half day online event gave a platform to exploring leadership, overcoming adversity and learning from the achievements across the health and social care system within NI in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. As well as this, our speakers provided motivational insights into what it takes to lead, and succeed, during challenging times.

“Our Mind is our Greatest Strength”
The key note address included inspirational speaker James MacSorely, a bronze medal winning NI Paralympian and World Champion wheelchair basketball player who spoke openly about his battles with health and depression and being determined to continue with his passion for sport despite this.
The second speaker was Dr Hannah Shields, a dentist and the first Northern Irish woman to summit Mount Everest. She shared her breathtaking experiences from some of the most inhospitable places on Earth and talked about coming close to death and the importance of strength and dependence within a team.

Both inspirational speakers shared insights into overcoming personal challenges and reflected on resilience, willpower and determination; important attributes of all healthcare leaders.

The conference also included a stimulating panel discussion with various leaders from across the Northern Irish health care system sharing their stories of leading, adapting and thriving over the past two years. This was an interactive session with the opportunity to question, explore and learn about different leadership styles and experiences and how this shaped the Northern Ireland response to the pandemic.
