The Scottish Clinical Leadership Fellows' scheme

The Scottish Clinical Leadership Fellows’ scheme began in January of this year with the appointment of two fellows to NHS Education for Scotland and to the Scottish Government’s Health and Social Care Directorate. In common with the National Medical Director’s Clinical Fellow Scheme in England the emphasis is on experiential learning. Fellows are immersed in their host organisations and encouraged to contribute creatively to a wide variety of projects. Named executive sponsors ensure access to the most senior personnel and NHS Education for Scotland’s National Leadership Unit provide a tailored leadership development programme for all fellows.

As the two inaugural fellows we have spent time between NHS Education for Scotland and the Scottish Government, working on projects related to the Promoting Professionalism and Excellence in Medicine agenda. These have focused on strengthening medical workforce planning strategies, encouraging professionalism in junior doctors’ rotas and on building awareness and support for leadership and management training in Scotland.

The scheme is already growing with new host organisations, including the General Medical Council, NHS National Services Scotland, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Royal College of Anaesthetists hosting or co-hosting fellows from August 2014. The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Glasgow are also hosting a Clinical Leadership Fellow from August 2014. The fellowship has been an excellent experience and we would strongly encourage all interested doctors in training in Scotland to look out for the next round of applications, expected towards the end of 2014.
