Teaching doctors in training about management and leadership

By Stephen Gillam
Published by BMJ

In this editorial from the BMJ,Stephen Gillam (director, public health teaching) argues that new frameworks help but old obstacles hamper progress when teaching doctors in training about management and leadership.

The article discusses the five domains of the Medical Leadership Competency Framework and the positives and negatives of the model. It finishes by arguing that we need more opportunities to share experience and learning with other disciplines, other sectors, and other countries and that he grooming of clinical leaders needs to be more clearly structured, grounded in evidence, and properly managed.
