Dr Avi Mehra

BUPA
MBBS BSc (Hons)

Avi was the National Medical Director's Clinical Fellow at Bupa from 2014-15. He completed his medical training at Imperial College in 2011, having earlier graduated with a BSc in Management from the Imperial College Business School. During this intercalated year Avi gained a greater understanding of the broader managerial and economic challenges facing the healthcare industry, igniting a passion to explore and develop new innovative strategies for healthcare delivery and improvement.

Following graduation, Avi completed his foundation training in the South Thames Deanery, before taking on a role as an Honorary Associate in Patient Safety & Quality Improvement at Brighton & Sussex NHS Trust. In this role he launched various initiatives across the Safety, Quality and Innovation agendas including leading an extensive trust-wide project to improve clinical handover. He guided the design, development and successful launch of bespoke integrated handover software, whilst also addressing wider organisational issues through a combination of cultural, educational and system-wide solutions. He also launched a Quality Improvement and Innovation network, as a Chapter of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Open School. Through regular workshops and events, the Chapter connects students, staff and trainees across all disciplines and grades, helping facilitate multidisciplinary collaboration and education in patient safety, quality improvement and healthcare innovation. It is currently being expanded across Kent, Surrey and Sussex and Avi is working with national leads to improve student and trainee engagement in such initiatives across the UK. Avi is able to further his interest in quality improvement through his role as a Clinical Advisor and Peer Reviewer for BMJ Quality.

Avi holds a strong passion for innovation and entrepreneurship in healthcare, particularly within the medical technology sector. He studied Strategic Management and Management of Technology and Innovation at Harvard University and has recently been appointed as an Innovation Fellow at the Postgraduate Medical Institute, Anglia Ruskin University. He is currently working on a number of initiatives to drive growth within this sector in the UK and abroad.
