Dr Emily Fay

The Royal College of Ophthalmologists
National Medical Director's Clinical Fellow 2023/24
Doctor

After studying Medicine at the University of Oxford, and intercalating with a first class BA in Neuroscience, Emily completed academic foundation training in London. At university, she received multiple scholarships and prizes for academic performance and also pursued an interest in clinical research. Emily has completed a research Masters in neuropsychology, composed several peer-reviewed publications, written book chapters and won prizes for oral presentations.

Emily is passionate about providing high-quality teaching within and outside the workplace. She has designed and delivered an annual series of Neuroscience, Physiology and Pharmacology tutorials for undergraduate students, for which she received excellent 360-degree feedback. Emily also sat on the interview panel for incoming medical students at Oxford and St George’s University, and provides editorial expertise to digital medical education companies.

A desire to understand healthcare holistically led Emily to undertake work as a medical writer and healthcare analyst, which provided insight into the wider healthcare landscape. These roles equipped her with excellent communication and project management skills which she translates to delivering quality improvement projects within the workplace, helping to create a more efficient and sustainable working environment.

Reason for applying for the scheme

Emily is delighted to have been appointed as a National Medical Director’s Clinical Fellow. She hopes that the scheme will offer unparalleled opportunity to develop into an insightful and compassionate leader early in her career, ultimately allowing her to positively shape the future of healthcare. She is eager to learn from senior leaders in national healthcare organisations, and to gain an understanding of how decisions shaping health policy are made. Emily is also highly motivated by working alongside a cohort of likeminded FMLM clinical fellows, from varied healthcare backgrounds, and becoming part of a network capable of implementing change.

Through the year, Emily hopes to gain insight into the challenges facing healthcare at a systems level, as well as developing a robust toolkit of skills to tackle these problems in a structured manner. She also hopes to expand her ability to persuade and to negotiate with healthcare leaders. Emily has developed a particular interest in technology and digital transformation and hopes to translate this to improving service provision within Ophthalmology.

Overall, Emily strongly believes that healthcare practitioners need to be strategic leaders in the orchestration of a successful health service, and hopes that the scheme will empower leaders of the future to do so.
