NHS England and NHS Improvement 2021/22
National Medical Director's Clinical Fellow Scheme 2021/22

Emma Hadley studied at the University of Birmingham, graduating in 2013 with Honours. Since graduation, Emma has completed Core Medical Training and is currently training as a Geriatric Registrar in the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Deanery.

Emma has shown an interest in leadership roles and change management throughout her career and in 2018/2019, Emma took a year out of her medical training to complete the Brighton and Sussex Medical School Leadership and Education Fellow Programme, which included completing a Post Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Commissioning and Leadership. This role provided Emma with the opportunity to immerse herself in various aspects of medical leadership and management at a local trust. The affiliated PG Certificate provided education on some of the fundamental theories and skills required for medical leadership, education and management. During this year, Emma worked on many trust-wide projects however her main focus was improving staff wellbeing and morale at the trust. This wellbeing project was nominated and a finalist for the BMJ Awards Wellbeing Category 2020 and won the Royal College of Physicians Turner Warwick Series 2020 for Kent, Surrey and Sussex. Emma has continued to show her interest in improving staff wellbeing and morale and has been an advocate for her peers during the Covid-19 pandemic, helping to ensure and promote safe working environments.

In her free time, Emma is a keen runner, swimmer and cyclist and is a member of a local triathlon group. Emma enjoys new challenges and is looking forward to forthcoming sporting events.

Reason for applying for the scheme

Emma is eager to continue developing as a clinical leader within the NHS. Having had exposure to leadership and management at a local level, Emma would now like to experience this at a national level. During her time at NHS England and Improvement, Emma hopes to gain better understanding of policy development and implementation as well as immerse herself in project work and any opportunities she is given. Emma is incredibly grateful to FMLM, NHS England and NHS Improvement for this experience and the privilege to undertake this unique leadership training programme.
