Dr Jacob Oguntimehin

UK Health Security Agency
National Medical Director's Clinical Fellow 2023/24
Doctor

Dr Jacob Oguntimehin is a junior doctor with a profound interest in public health, health policy and health system strengthening. To further these interests, he completed an intercalated Master’s Degree in Health Policy, Planning and Financing at the London School of Economics and Political Science before his final year of medical school.

Jacob then went on to graduate with a distinction in undergraduate Medicine from Keele University in 2021 before completing the Academic Foundation Programme (Leadership and Management) with the University Sussex NHS Hospitals Trust.

During both his undergraduate studies and foundation training he has occupied leadership positions in both national and international positions in his areas of interest. The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, Imperial College Health Partners and The International Working Group for Health System Strengthening are just some of the various organisations he has worked for in a leadership capacity, implementing strategy and collaborating in multidisciplinary teams to solve complex system issues.

Alongside his professional accomplishments, he founded a community interest company to further national efforts to widen participation in medicine. The Aspiring Medic’s Support (TAMS) was established in 2018 and has reached thousands of students from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds. Collaborating with The Royal College of Surgeons of England, they have developed an award-winning national scholarship programme to improve educational outcomes of this group.

As a keen polymath, he enjoys learning from researchers and thinkers from other disciplines, strongly believing that cross-disciplinary collaboration is key to solving many of the issues that befall England's health system.

Reason for applying for the scheme

Jacob aspires to become a consultant in public health with a focus on healthcare public health. He applied to the scheme to acquire further exposure to the demands of system leadership, whilst providing him with the opportunity to contribute positively to the strategic direction and operational delivery of an organisation. He believes this scheme provides him with a unique opportunity to better prepare himself for the challenges of leading teams to solve complex issues.

Additionally, he applied to the scheme to develop his ability to contribute to guideline and policy development. With a Master’s degree in Health Policy, Planning and Financing he looks forward to applying his learnings in policy formulation, implementation, and evaluation to deliver both regional and national impact. He believes the opportunity to be immersed at the centre of a national healthcare organisation and contribute to policy development will allow him to further appreciate the complexity and interdependent nature of England’s health system. This in turn will enhance his adeptness in dealing with complexity and his ability to engage in collaborative working, necessary skills for an effective system leader.
