The Health Foundation 2021/22
National Medical Director's Clinical Fellow Scheme 2021/22

Originally from the Northeast, Joe undertook his undergraduate medical degree at the Peninsula Medical School during which time he took a year out to study a master’s degree in medical law at the University of Manchester’s School of Law. Following completion of his studies, Joe went on to complete his foundation training at North Manchester General Hospital of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. Within this role, Joe led junior doctor redeployment at the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020 and acted as junior doctor lead in command-and-control structures. Following completion of the foundation programme, Joe designed and completed a novel Medical Directors Leadership Fellowship at North Manchester. Within this role he worked with the executive to redevelop services in the organisation with the primary aim of improving working conditions for junior doctors.

Outside of his medical work, Joe has represented junior doctors nationally at the British Medical Association UK Junior Doctors Committee.

He also currently holds an Honorary Research Fellowship at the University of Salford School of Health and Society where he has authored several peer-reviewed articles. Additionally, Joe is half-way through completion of a Global MBA degree at the Alliance Manchester Business School.

Joe is keen and motivated to apply his clinical, policy and business knowledge to projects transforming and improving health services through novel solutions in workforce productivity, tech, and data analysis. Building toward this goal, he is also involved in the NHS Accelerated Access as a Clinical Entrepreneur.

Reason for applying for the scheme

Joe is passionate about clinical leadership within healthcare, with a strong belief that distributive, transformative leaders have the ability to benefit patients and staff alike. As the NHS moves into arguably the most difficult period in its history, clinical leaders will be more important than ever, to ensure the core values of the NHS are maintained in the face of immense logistical challenges.

The FMLM programme is an opportunity to not only apply the skills developed in his previous roles in policy, management and leadership, but also provides unique learning opportunities in systems-thinking and exposure to senior leaders within the wider UK health economy. Additionally, the structured teaching programme will ground experience in theory, providing a holistic approach to professional development as a future leader working within the health sector.
